Diabetes
Unless you or someone you know has been diagnosed with Diabetes you are probably not aware of the severe complications associated with the disease. Even more importantly you are probably not aware of the lifestyle requirements the disease imposes on the patient living with diabetes.
What is Diabetes?
Being diagnosed with diabetes means you have too much sugar (glucose) in your blood. Insulin (a hormone produced by the pancreas) moves the sugar from the blood into the cells. Your cells need sugar for energy but too much sugar circulating in our blood causes problems to the blood vessels which can lead to heart attack, stroke, loss of vision and amputations.
Insulin Resistance and Blood Sugar
Prediabetes (also called Insulin Resistance) happens when your
blood sugar is above normal but not high enough to be called
diabetes. Once you are diagnosed with prediabetes you are at
high risk for developing diabetes. However, diabetes at this
point may be prevented with lifestyle modification. Ask the
Triana Prevention Center how we can help with this.
Type 1 diabetes happens when you have little or no insulin. This
is a result of your pancreas stopping the production of insulin.
This type of diabetes requires taking insulin for the rest of
your life.
Type 2 diabetes happens when your body stops using your own
insulin. In some cases this type of diabetes can be prevented
but if you are already diagnosed it can be controlled by diet,
exercise, medication and in severe cases insulin.
Type 2
diabetes is associated with several factors: race, family
history, too little physical activity, overweight and a
high-calorie diet.
Gestational diabetes happens when a pregnant woman has high
blood sugar. Women who have had gestational diabetes are at high
risk for developing Type 2 diabetes.
